Meet John Bennett, Evident's Managing Director

“Evident's strong vision for the future and expansion plans instantly excited me”

Meet John Bennett, Evident's Managing Director.

John has worked across the utility sector for over 30 years and is an expert in this complex and dynamic landscape. Prior to joining Evident, he worked on the successful rollout of smart energy meters across Great Britain.

John is committed to helping market participants achieve their strategic goals. In his role as Managing Director, he brings both passion and expertise to support Evident's mission to certify the transition to a clean economy.

Here, John discusses his role at Evident and shares his advice for those looking to embark on a career in the green energy sector.

What is your role at Evident and how does your previous experience inform your role?

As Evident's Managing Director, I am responsible for growing our services and promoting the cooperative culture that attracted me to the company. My ambition is to enhance our services, taking Evident's business performance to the next level, and ensuring a consistent service delivery for all our clients.

In previous roles, I managed regulatory engagement with the UK Government as an expert advisor. This experience embedded a deep understanding of complex regulatory environments, such as those in which we operate at Evident.

Leveraging my experience in multi-stakeholder ecosystems, I am helping Evident expand into new business areas and support our collaboration with governments and organisations to establish robust and credible certification standards.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in Sustainability?

I've always been passionate about driving change for the better in the energy sector, and sustainability is fundamental to this. However, opportunities in sustainability didn't exist when I began my career. Fast forward to 2024, everyone - from governments to water companies - is exploring sustainability measures, because it is fundamental for the planet and therefore a focus for all forward looking businesses.

Evident is a global leader in the transition towards the clean economy and I'm excited to be an integral part of this mission, supporting the organisation and more broadly helping overcome challenges we face in the sustainability sector.

What advice do you have for people wanting to work in this sector?

I have three key pieces of advice that I wish I'd been given:

  1. Focus on something you enjoy and have a genuine interest in, you're more likely to succeed when your natural enthusiasm drives you.
  2. Be prepared to take on challenges.
  3. Don't overcomplicate things where a simple solution exists.
